KNOW YOUR STATUS It is always better to know your status, whether you have engaged in risky sexual behaviour in the past or now considering entering a sexual relationship with a new partner. Many couples come in to get tested prior to marriage. It is no longer just a matter of trust, but a matter of self-respect and respect for your present and future partners. THE PROCESS From beginning to end confidentiality is of utmost importance. THE PRETEST SESSION Prior to testing, the individual meets with a counsellor. In this secure and confidential environment they discuss the sexual history of the patient and the counsellor may highlight the importance of safe sex practices. The importance of knowing your HIV/AIDS status is highlighted here, and the counsellor may decide to explain the testing procedure. At this time it is up to the individual to decide whether or not they will proceed to have the HIV/AIDS test and may address any questions they may have surrounding the issue. TESTING Testing is entirely voluntary and the procedure takes less than ten minutes. During this time a blood sample is taken and the patient is given an anonymous identification number that links them to their test sample. No names are recorded; the only person with that information is the one administering the test. Everything said during the counselling and testing session is strictly between you and the test specialist. RESULTS Results are usually ready a week after testing. Person’s may receive a call by the test specialist to come in to receive the results or may in some cases obtain results via telephone. It is imperative that the individual keep the anonymous identification number as it is the only thing that ties them to the test sample. In the case where the individual has tested positive, the test specialist may request that they come in for post test counselling and learn about living with the HIV virus. Counsellors are there to offer support and answer any questions that the individual may have.
