SCHOOLS, BUSINESSES, Government institutions, the Church and a number of voluntary organisations marked World AIDS Day yesterday in a number of ways. Whether it was public testing in the heart of Bridgetown at Jubilee Gardens or the erection of special HIV/AIDS stops (bus stops with the Love Life message) done by the Ministry of Public Works, several people paid attention to the message. Parkinson Memorial Secondary School students showed consideration for HIV patients yesterday, when they donated a barrel of foodstuff to the HIV/AIDS food bank. Health and family life education teacher Josette Sam said they collected the items over one week and the students were enthusiastic about it. "They each gave five dollars worth of food items and this barrel is the result. The students who are sexually active, are aware of the AIDS information but to ask if there is a change, the answer is no. More needs to be done in the schools," she said. Over in Country Road, St Michael, the Ministry of Housing and Lands and the National Housing Corporation came together to stage a seminar on The Impact Of HIV/AIDS On Productivity In The Workplace. While all the panelists for the discussions were not on hand, the staffers had a very interactive session with Derek Alleyne, assistant general secretary with the National Union of Public Workers. Judith Hinds, one of the co-ordinators, said apart from setting up a health and safety committee to look at AIDS and HIV, they should also address other prevalent diseases. Mercurius Moore, another committee member, said staff were concerned about how to cope and how within a free movement of labour environment, whether HIV positive individuals would receive free antiretroviral drugs. Monica Lowe said the session also looked at loss of man hours through sick leave, institutional memory loss and the strain placed on the National Insurance Scheme. There was also a meeting of the faith-based leaders at Hilton Barbados to discuss the Church's role in the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS. Source: www.nationnews.com
