On the day of St. Valentine, while loved ones are exchanging gifts, chocolates, candy and flowers, the Ministry of Health will be launching the new HIV/AIDS Web Portal from 10am at the Hilton Barbados.

At this opportune time, the Ministry of Health chooses to remind the individuals of the importance of safe sex practices and the consequences of callous sexual interactions.

The website www.minofhealthhivaids.org, a collaborated effort between Sade Leon-Slinger of the Ministry of Health and Acute Vision Inc., seeks to provide information in a clear comprehensible fashion within a localised setting.

Internet users will find sections that detail the step by step process of the HIV test, methods of prevention, local institutions that provide counselling, treatment and support. Students and teachers may browse the web portal and find external links to various websites, brochures and PowerPoint presentations that provide additional information surrounding the subject matter. Individuals who want to take part in the fight against HIV & AIDS will find out how in the “How Can I Help?” section set aside for this particular purpose.

The aim of this information portal is not only to provide information on a superficial level but to create connections and linkages from person to person and from person to agency. It is necessary that individuals know that they have somewhere to go, or that they too can help. Similarly, it is necessary to provide a portal of information that individuals can access to find the answers to questions that they may be afraid to ask in person. The Ministry of Health has decided to use this website to sensitise and educate the general public. Let’s hope that it does all this and more.

It is a cruel reality that there is a general attitude of aloofness and disdain towards the issues of HIV/AIDS. Those infected often find themselves battered by the hands of alienation and stigmatisation. In many instances, those who engage in sexual practices that put them at risk prefer to live in denial than face life as an infected person.

Through this comprehensive web portal, we here at the Ministry of Health hope to combat the many ideologies and practices that promote and perpetuate behaviours that may lead to HIV/AIDS infection. We also want to assure those who are at risk and those who have been infected that are places to go and communities that care.

We welcome you to Barbados HIV/AIDS Information Portal and hope that the information provided will be of value to you.
