Jamaican edutainment group, ASHE is currently in Barbados using the performing arts to empower, educate and entertain students from some of Barbados’ primary and secondary schools in an National Cultural Foundation/Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports initiative. Ashe’s edutainment tour involves a multi-layered approach to achieving the goals of decreasing the occurrence of unwanted pregnancies and infection from HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Young people and their parents get an opportunity to watch performances of Vibes in the “World of Sexuality”, “Parenting Vibes – in the world of Sexuality and learn skills for handling the sexual world. They are also encouraged to develop healthy relationships and family unit and get the opportunity to participate in “rap” sessions about sexual health and responsibility.

Health providers, caregivers, social workers and creative artistes also learn how to use Ashe’s education, information and communication edutainment methodology to be more effective in working with reproductive health concerns, especially as it relates to HIV/AIDS and other STIs.

The Ashe tour therefore seeks to empower and transform young people to make healthy choices and practice living healthy lifestyles of abstinence, protection or reclaiming their virginity. It also encourages young people to become involved in positive activities such as performing arts and sports while they develop their talents, gifts and passions. While in Barbados, Ashe will be performing at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, the Government Industrial schools and other educational institutions.

It is a cruel reality that there is a general attitude of aloofness and disdain towards the issues of HIV/AIDS. Those infected often find themselves battered by the hands of alienation and stigmatisation. In many instances, those who engage in sexual practices that put them at risk prefer to live in denial than face life as an infected person.

Through this comprehensive web portal, we here at the Ministry of Health hope to combat the many ideologies and practices that promote and perpetuate behaviours that may lead to HIV/AIDS infection. We also want to assure those who are at risk and those who have been infected that are places to go and communities that care.

We welcome you to Barbados HIV/AIDS Information Portal and hope that the information provided will be of value to you.
