Redland is small family owned farm hidden away in a little valley between Andrews Sugar Factory and Villa Nova, known mainly to residents of the area and by car rally fans. Until 2002 Redland grew mainly sugar cane with yams and sweet potatoes as rotation crops. However the area has always been well known for its avocado, and citrus orchards.
The farm is owned by Linda and Charles Herbert and run by an energetic manager Adrian Moore. Many of the 15 staff live in the area and have worked in agriculture there for many years. One of the farm’s biggest assets is the combined experience of the staff and their love for the area.
With the decline in the price paid for sugar cane the farm has progressively diversified into fruit and vegetables. 2007 saw the last fields being taken out of sugar cane and moved to fruit and vegetable production.
The vision for the farm’s future is to cater to the increasing population trend to healthier lifestyles through eating fresh fruit and vegetables grown with the minimum use of chemicals.
The need for insecticides is reduced by companion planting where one crop is a natural repellant to insects and helps protect its companion crop e.g. marigolds. Where chemical insecticides are used the farm also chooses environment friendly products.
Where possible natural fertilizer from chickens, cattle and horses are used.
The typical crops in year round production are string beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, spinach, Chinese cabbage, pumpkin (belly & garden), sweet potatoes, yams, eddoes and cassava. Thyme and basil are always available.
The fruit orchards which are not yet mature will produce mangoes, avocados, shaddock, grapefruit, oranges, limes, tangerines, sugar apples, golden apple, sour sop, mammie apple, bananas, figs, plantains, five finger, plumrose, cherry, cashew, Jamaica ackie, coconut and passion fruit.
Many of these fruit are used to produce fresh juice concentrate and drinks. These are typically sold frozen with no preservatives.
The majority of the farm’s produce is marketed through its Farm Shop onsite which opens Monday through Saturday. In the Farm Shop the produce is supplemented by products from other local farms and from “backyard farming” produce in the area. This ensures that a wide selection is always available.
